STI College Global City varsity squad beat Celebrity team

The Celebrity Team and STI Team

Former NAASCU campaigner Abby Chavez sank two pressure packed free throws with 6.5 seconds left to lift the STI College Global City Varsity basketball team to a 77 – 75 win over a Team made up of famous celebrities at the Makati Coliseum last Sunday July 28., 2013. In the ensuing play the celebrities muffed their chance to tie the game as the Global City squad went away with the win in this exhibition game which was set up by the Office of Student affairs of STI.

The half-filled coliseum was in a frenzy when the celebrities were introduced as Derek Ramsay, Matt Evans, Luis Alandy, Ejay Falcon, Lance Christopher, Young JV, Jose Sarasola, Fred Payawan, James Blanco, Marco Alcaraz, former PBA Star Bal David and Gerald Anderson were called on the court one by one. Leading the Celebrities was Anderson who showcased his versatility by scoring off drives, jumpers and three pointers enroute to a game high of 34 points.  If Anderson was all around the floor, former San Sebastian Stag Marco Alcaraz was a beast in the shaded lane as he patrolled the middle with much alacrity, he ended up with 14 points and tons of rebounds. Derek Ramsay on the other hand had his moments as he showed the STIers  his veteran smarts and court savy as he ran rings around most of his defenders.  In the end, fans of Gerald Anderson were the last women shrieking as he put on a show worthy of the admission price.

On the other side of the court, the Global City squad began to spring to life after the first half. Aside from Chavez, former Olympians Lester Bocablo, Arjay Napeñas,  Jerome Ortega and Erven Silverie took their time to score sparingly to knot the count at 55 – all at the end of the third quarter. STI exploded for 25 third quarter points after scoring only 30 at the half.  Chavez and Napeñas each scored 7 points in the quarter while in the fourth, Bocablo’s six points combined with Chavez and inside operator Ken Baquiran’s five points each to keep the Global City team. The Celebrities last stand came after Derek Ramsay scored off an undergoal stab to tie the score 75 – all which eventually set up the Chavez free throws after he was fouled.

The Celebrity Team took the first half mainly through the efforts of Anderson who said before that he idolizes Allen Iverson and LeBron James. True enough, he played like his idols as he drained three three pointers in the first quarter to score a total of 13 points. Anderson, a Holy Trinity College varsity player back when he was in High School in General Santos City reserved the best in the second half as he poured in 21 more points to stem the tide after the STI team came charging back.  The celebrities were all accommodating in this game as they gave their fans a chance to take pictures and autographs. The event was produced by X-Factor productions inc. and part of the proceeds will go to the fountain of living foundation.
