There comes a time in the life of an Atenean where he sets aside all his inhibitions and carries his one true passion and prepare for battle. That is the one pure essence of the Ateneo Basketball League - a league of Ateneans, by Ateneans and for Ateneans. Well it sounds like government and it sounds like a lot of passion involved in it, well its true. Ateneo has been at the forefront of Philippine Basketball since the early 20th century. Even if the so called dark ages in the 90's shut down the Ateneo's haul of basketball titles, the die hard fans were always there to support the Blue and White.
The Ateneo Basketball league started nine years ago and there were only three divisions back then and only twenty six teams. We were just sad back then when the league opened since we were already in our barkada was already in our early thirties and we were quite way beyond our prime. The team entered in the third division which was coined as "for fun@!" Eventually, the for fun division had some of the well fought games since a lot of players understood the game well so defensive patterns and offensive sets were quite well planned. Our team lost out in the crossover semifinals but we can never forget the fun we had back then.
January is the time when Ateneans dream that they are playing for the Blue Eagles. It is the time when they wear the Blue and White jerseys and are proud to be part of the ABL. The ABL has grown since that inaugural season since this year there will be more than 300 teams playing in more than 45 divisions. Well, know you know why Ateneans are very passionate when they support the Ateneo Blue Eagles, for now - let the games begin.
