This is the Press Release written by Basketbolista's John Imperial on the Press Conference of the 8th NAASCU leading to the opening on August 8, 2008.
The National Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) announced in a press conference today the opening of its 8th season to be held at Rizal Memorial Coliseum on August 8, 2008, Friday at exactly 8:08 to mark the significance of its eight years of existence. Boasting of 12 members schools from Metro Manila and various parts of parts of Luzon, NAASCU stands to be one of, if not the biggest, among collegiate basketball leagues, with a total student population of almost half a million.
Since its inception in 2001, the league has grown in membership with the entry of various schools, the latest of which is the Lyceum of Subic Bay. To date, its members include the top three information technology schools in the country, AMA Computer University, STI College, and Informatics; University of Manila, University of Makati, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasay, New Era University, Centro Escolar University, Holy Angel University of Pampanga, San Sebastian College – Recoletos de Cavite, and St. Clare College of Caloocan.
The league’s main drawer is its basketball tournament, which has produced the likes of Dexter Micutuan, last year’s MVP, who now plays for Misamis in Liga Pilipinas, AMACU’s Chito Jaime, the 2006 MVP who now plays for Toyota Otis in the Philippine Basketball League. This year’s tournament is bannered by STI’s Ramon Mabayo, who plays for San Mig Coffee in the PBL. Other sporting events include swimming, chess, track and field and billiards.
