STI West Negros University humbles STI College Las Pinas

Renz Solomon scores on the fastbreak

A new basketball season, a new hope. Last year’s 1st runner-up STI West Negros University returns to the STI National Basketball Tournament National Finals with the hope of recapturing lost glory and is aching to get back at their tormentors form last year. First stop is their 94 – 53 shellacking of STI College Las Piñas, their first win and a few more strides before pay- back time.

Adjie attempts to score

Returning for the last time this year are the three Kings of 2016 Charry Cadase, Rouichi Belocura and 2016 Mythical Selectee Renz Solomon and their band of brothers from Bacolod who they brought along to reinforce their once formidable stronghold of this tournament and avenge their 2017 loss. STI College Las Piñas was the first team to serve notice of the former winners.

Jerome Faelden scores on the drive

It took STI West Negros University just six minutes to flex their muscles, open up a 16 – 6 lead and they never looked back. Their suffocating defense made the team from Las Piñas bleed for their points and just scored at will. The first quarter ended with STI WNU comfortably ahead 24 - 8.  The second quarter wasn’t much different as STI College Las Piñas was held down to just six points and STI WNU took out the spark plugs of the blue shirted Las Piñas team. At the half the tally was a twenty three point spread for STI WNU 37 – 14.

Dela Cruz with some points in the paint

In the second half, STI College Las Piñas would eventually pick up its offense, but so did the Ilonggos. Danico Merced waxed hot from beyond the arc as he sank six three pointers enroute to a 25 point game. That was the only bright spot with the once potent Las Piñas offense that averaged 106 points per game in their previous seven games. The Las Piñas top guns suddenly could not find the hole as last year’s Mythical 5 selectee Jericho Nograles and Chris Jutie had a hard time penetrating the West Negros defense. Jerome Faelden and Nehemiah Gutay were the only other help that Merced had in their offense as both players scored 10 points each with Faelden grabbing ten rebounds also.

Belocura scores on the fastbreak

The Three Kings Cadase, Solomon and Belocura led STI WNU in scoring as the three combined for 46 points as their fast and furious style of play netted them 94 points. Solomon’s efficiency was quite spectacular as he had 16 points, 2 assists, 2 steals and no turnovers in barely 14 minutes of play. As the tournament comes to a close, the only thing that the Bacolodnons would like to do is to hoist another trophy and that will definitely happen if they continue their winning ways.
