STI West Negros turn back STI College Ortigas-Cainta

Rebound battle

Visayas champion STI West Negros University pounded STI College Ortigas-Cainta to submission in the first half then cruised to victory in the second half to win their second game and tie STI College Malolos for the top slot in Group B with similar 2 – 0 win-loss slates.  STI West Negros will now battle the other  undefeated team in the Group B bracket – STI College Malolos to determine the top team in their group.

Excellent defense by Jei Ramos

Center Forward Kobe Vizcarra and point guard Renz Solomon proved to be a strong 1 – 2 punch for the West Negros squad as both players scored eight points each as the 8 – 4 start of West Negros suddenly became 24 – 10 advantage after one quarter of play.  The Ortigas-Cainta team shot poorly as they sank only 3 of 16 shots (19%) while the West Negros team went 9 of 17 (53%)

The second quarter saw West Negros forward JV Veloso showcase his scoring prowess by scoring 14 points on 6 of 7 shooting.  Veloso helped increase a 14 point lead to a whopping 24 point lead by the half as their defense tightened up to make the Ortigas-Cainta team bleed for points. While the Cainta team tried to put the cuffs on Veloso, John Nermal controlled the inside and scored at will.

Although STI West Negros coasted through the second half, STI College Ortigas-Cainta would try to mount a rally but will eventually be silenced by the defense of the Bacolod based West Negros team. Jeff Estabillo and Van Dam Locsin tried to give the Ortigas-Cainta team back to the ball game but the offense of JV Veloso and John Nermal was just too much for the Rizal based team.

STI West Negros University had the better shooting percentage 48% - 36%, outrebounded their opponents 48 – 43 and had more assists 15 – 8 which showed the over-all dominance of the West Negros team. The Bacolodians will be meeting the STI College Malolos team tomorrow for the top spot in the Group B bracket.
