STI 17th National Youth Convention launches in Baguio

All roads lead to the CAP John Hay Trade and Cultural Center on December 5, 2011 for the STI 17th National Youth Convention with this year’s theme “It’s all about ME, It’s all about WE!” STI’ers from different regions in the country are all excited to be part of the convention since the one of a kind approach of the convention aims to give students added knowledge that they usually don’t learn in school.
STI’ers are once again treated to this one of a kind extravaganza that has been a much awaited event for all STI students. This year’s STI National Youth Convention focuses on the students being guided through various topics that will enhance their self development to become better members of the community through three action packed presentations.
The first topic entitled “It’s all about ME, Me, Myself and I: Self Development” was delivered by Mr. Edwin Superable, a faculty member from STI College Novaliches.
The second topic, entitled It’s all about WE - Me & My Community was delivered by veteran trainer and author of numerous books on Abundance, Mr. PIDO AGUILAR. 
Finally, the third topic entitled It’s all about US – Making a difference, was delivered by STI College Bacoor’s IT Instructor Mr. RICKY BUNAG
The national youth convention aims to systematically provide opportunities that would trigger discovery, clarification, establishment, and enhancement of specific values for STI students. The NYC will then go to Kalibo, Bacolod City, Ormoc City and Cebu City in January, Cagayan de Oro City, General Santos City and Davao City in February, Naga City and Puerto Princesa City in March.
Fourteen STI schools from North Luzon totalling two thousand eight hundred students and faculty members were there to witness the event. STIers from the Ilocos Region (Laoag and Vigan ), La Union, Pangasinan (Alaminos & San Carlo) Tarlac, Nueva Ecija (San Jose), Pampanga (San Fernando) Bulacan (Balagtas and Malolos) Isabela (Tuguegarao, Ilagan, Cauayan & Santiago) and host Baguio City were on hand to watch the launch of this nationwide event that will run until March 2012.

TD Kuya Video
While in High School we were immersed with the Tulong Dunong program in which we were tasked to teach four students from a public school. The program which was a pet project of Fr. James O'Brien helped a lot of underprivileged kids go to Ateneo High School and eventually College. When Fr. O'B died the program suddenly took a not so good turn as funds were scarce and money was hard to get. Enter the Tulong Dunong Perpetuity fund which aims to raise 50 Million Pesos to send 100 scholars to Ateneo. below are ways to donate:

RE BLUE TION - Ateneo Alumni Homecoming 2011
The Mass at Gesu
When the Ateneo Blue Eagles won the UAAP Title for the first time in 1987 they were invited to to the Ateneo Alumni Homecoming at the Ateneo High School covered courts to be given a heroes welcome for finally nailing the ever elusive UAAP crown. Fortunately, me and my friend Jeffrey Tan also got invited since we were tasked to introduce the Blue Eagles to the Ateneo Alumni. Back then, what we did was kind of a novelty since we introduced the team through a rap number with Jeff Tan acting as the boom box and me introducing the team through a rap we made. Mingling with the Alumni back then made me belong to the community and was really looking forward to 2012 which is the year that our batch will be silver jubilarians.

December 3, 2011 came and the last of our upperclassmen hosted the Ateneo Alumni Homecoming with their brand of celebration entitled ReBLUEtion. High School batch 1986 saw their final quarter in High School halted as the 1986 EDSA Revolution took away the remaining two months of classes which was not the best way to end the best times of your lives. But the 1986 batch became closer to each other even after their last months in the Ateneo High School was abbreviated by the revolution.

Jubilarians from different batches were there to celebrate and the one thing nice about attending Ateneo gatherings is the prospect of seeing lots of friends who I have not seen in ages. From the Ateneo HS Batch 1961 I saw the father of my good friends and same goes with the other non jubiliarians who were just there to enjoy the evening. For me there were two highlights of the evening, one is the launch of the Tulong Dunong MTV which was a song of the APO Hiking society that was rewritten and now sung by Parokya ni Edgar. The song includes lots of Ateneans who were also former TD Kuyas showing what TD is all about. I was lucky enough to be part of the launch together with my former TD teacher Onnie Martin.

One of the best part of the event was the turnover of Batch 1986 to our batch of the Symbolic Eagle. Imagine, having seen the Ateneo Alumni Homecoming for the past 24 years its already our time to host and as of now I am so excited for our batch to celebrate more than 25 years of of being a part of the very prestigious University that breeds men for others. I am who I am because of the Ateneo. That is why its time to give back and hopefully come the 2012 Alumni Homecoming I hope that there will be a lot of Ateneans who will be happy of our hosting.

Tulong Dunong Kuya Teaser
Even then we were so lucky to be immersed with kids who were intellectually capable but were unlucky with resources. The Ateneo Tulong - Dunong Program led by Fr. James O' Brien provided these kids with the opportunity to fly high. There are a lot of products of the Tulong Dunong program who came out to be good friends of mine and i so happy that it is getting much attention now. Here is a teaser of the video that will be shown come homecoming night December 3. It is a great collaboration of Ateneans past and present.

YONEX SUNRISE CHALLENGE
Five members of the STI College Olympians Badminton team joined the Yonex Sunrise Philippines National Badminton Open. The move was made so that the players will be able to gain experience and more importantly learn from what they were about to witness. The Olympians who played were Kris Bermudez of STI College Quezon Avenue, 2 - BSHRM student who played in the Women's Seniors division. STI College Fairview Freshman Kursty Alley Bonete was entered in the 17 and under and 19 and under tournaments respectively where she fared well.
STI College Global City's Khen Frank Duron fared well in the 19 and under Junior's division and the open tournament. Joining the three are the two new faces in the team, Jovy Susbilla and Eman Yapo who are both from STI College Taft. Yapo was entered in the Men's Open while Susbilla in the Women's OPen. At the same time they both teamed up in the Mixed Doubles open. The experience these five players got will be needed come NAASCU time in January. On to the next tournament then.

Pacman wins close one

Manny Pacquiao fought the fight of his life as he narrowly beat the one person who has got him figured out - Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico. A lot of Filipinos were disappointed and dismayed with the outcome with a lot also claiming that Marquez have actually won. That they say is the problem with the Filipinos not realizing that in boxing, like basketball there are nights when a team cannot figure out one specific team that has got his moves figured out. In all his opponents, the counterpunching of Marquez has definitely been the achilles heel of Pacquiao.

but Marquez thinks he won all three
But then again, Marquez was just waiting for Pacquiao to make a mistake. Pacquiao was the aggressor most of the time which Marquez liked because every time Pacquiao would land something he makes it a point to retaliate with what he has got. But then again, the good thing with Pacquiao is that he makes it a point to land a lot of punches that would eventually augur well in the judges scorecards specially when there is no clear winner in a round.

Nevada Athletic Commission Judge Robert Hoyle had Marquez leading after 10 rounds and but gave the final 2 rounds to Pacquiao for the Sarangani Congressman to level up and draw 114 - 114. Judge Dave Moretti on the other hand had Marquez leading after 7 rounds but gave Pacquiao four of the last five rounds for a 115 - 113 score in Pacquiao's favor. The third judge Glen Towbridge had Pacquiao leading all the way enroute to a 116 - 112 score. The result of the cards saw Pacquiao win via Majority decision. Imagine the three bouts, a draw, a split decision and a majority decision, thats' how close this trilogy has come to. Another Nevada device, the Compubox which counts down punches thrown, landed and other stuff had Pacquiao connecting 176 punches to Marquez's 138 with the Pacman connecting on 117 power punches to the Mexican's 100. Either way, the experts saw that Pacquiao was the aggressor and the one landing most of the punches thus the win.

The win was disappointing to a lot of Pacquiao fans. From the Pacman's last fight against Marquez, he has won convincingly against David Diaz, Oscar dela Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Joshua Clottey, Antonio Margarito and Shane Mosley. That was why while hearing Pacquiao train harder and his camp predicting a knock out, most of his fans were happy he won but were disappointed with the way he got the win. Bottomline, a win is a win and a lot of Americans who are not on the side of the Pacman where justifying the scores and why Pacquiao won, why can't we as Filipinos accept that move on. So what's next with the Pacman, we'll see.

Undas 2011
Our yearly visit to the parish of the Most Holy Redeemer where the remains of my Lolo and Lola, Mateo and Elisa Sipin and my niece Dana R. Garrido are placed.
Our youngest Angie with the youngest girl Bujoy. I remember the time when I used to take care of our youngest sibling, now she is doing that to me hahaha.
My sisters Angie and Elaiza joined by the two other sisters Janis and Bujoy. I think by the time the two kids reach the age of their Aunties they will also most probably reach their size!
That's the Pogi holding my youngest nephew Shobe. I am joined by two more nephews, Marc and Matthew. Time really flies fast.
My sister Elaiza with his two sons Marc and Josh with my other sister's son Matthew. Soon all of them will be taller than her.
The family of my Kuya who we took pictures of through the years. It's nice to see them all grown up. Louie will be graduating from College this second semester.
I believe that the blur seen on the upper left side of this picture is the spirit of my niece Dana. I know she died many years ago but her spirit lives on.
That's me, my sister Elaiza, mother dear, our youngest Angie and my kuya Arnel. Not in this picture is our eldest Manang Beth and another brother Arel.
