Ateneo GS cops 4th SBP National Title

The Ateneo Grade School basketball Team has done it once again for the fourth straight year as they masterfully orchestrated another Small Basketeers of the Philippines National Championship as they beat their Ateneo brothers from Davao 61 - 51 to win their fourth straight National Title. Coach PJ Navarro is still at the helm and all that he has done is inspire and motivate the boys to no end as they beat their Davao brothers by a mile. The Ateneo de Davao team was in control all throughout the game with their last lead stood at 44-41 at the end of the third period. But Ateneo's main man or is it main boy Jolo Mendoza took over for the Eaglets, scoring all his 10 points in a 10-2 run to kick off the fourth quarter en route to their fourth straight SBP title.

The best thing about Ateneo Basketball is that they all start young. I remember the time when star point guard Jun Reyes was out to make a name for himself with the grade school teams together with other big names that followed him like Joseph Canlas and Danny Francisco. Basketball then was so simple and Coach Chickoy Alvarez only had one play but was difficult to stop. The tradition has been carried on for ages with Jai Reyes being the last person to graduate in college who went the full distance of Ateneo Basketball, playing from grade school to college and making it to the Philipppine Basketball Association. Ateneo Grade School Basketball has been blessed the past four years as Head Coach PJ Navarro has brought back respect to Grade School basketball by capturing its fourth Small Basketeers of the Philippines title.

The past years were bannered by Jay Javelosa, Sheik Cariño, Aaron Black, Matt and Michael Nieto and now its Jolo Mendoza who has come out to be the next scoring sensation. The young Eagles beat the Xavier Stallions 59 -57 to win its fourth title under Coach PJ Navarro. Now that the grade school hoops has been resolved, its time for the Juniors and the Seniors to follow suit!

ADMU wins back to back National SBP Titles

News Flash - the Ateneo de Manila vs. Ateneo de Davao Championship game for the Small Basketeers of the Philippines (SBP) National Title. Ateneo de Davao paraded a tall line up with three players standing 5'6 and one standing 5'10! Oh my God and to think these are 11 year old kids. The Ateneo Davao team led by 9 pts in the first quarter, 7 pts at the half and by 1 pt at the end of the third quarter. The Ateneo de Manila team finally caught up with the Davaoeños in the last three minutes and eventually won for themselves Back to Back to Back SBP National Titles!!! Everyone contributed and there was no MVP. It was a total team effort. Congrats to our young ones! You made us proud!

Wait a moment...Ravena was not a part of the 1988 Ateneo Champion team, he played for the University of the East remember and at the same time Norman Black was with San Miguel then!?? So how could this be? First of all we are not referring to that 1988 Ateneo Seniors team, we are referring to the 2008 Ateneo Small Basketeers of the Philippines team which beat Xavier 45-44 for the SBP Title.

Olsen Racela, Albert "Saint" Mendoza and Jet Nieto helped the Ateneo win back to back titles in the 80's and are still not finished, they have brought their sons to the Ateneo and more importantly teamed up with the son of one of their former 80's foe Ferdinand "Bong" Ravena and current Ateneo senior's Coach Norman Black. Rafa Racela, Martin Mendoza, Matthew Nieto, Michael Nieto, Thirdy Ravena and Aaron Black came from families with great basketball backgrounds and they helped give the Ateneo Grade School back to back Small Basketeers of the Philippines titles. Joining them are other exciting players ages 9 to 11 with the son of good friend Donnie Puno (Sandro Puno), Jolo Mendoza - son of former UP Maroon Jigs Mendoza and the most important part of the team is Sheik Cariño.

Ateneo started the game with Aaron Black and Matthew Nieto doing most of the damage as they erected a 16-3 lead which Xavier had a hard time breaking the pressure defense of the Ateneo. In the second quarter it was Sheik Cariño who jumpstarted the Ateneo offense as they continued to pour on the points in the wake of a Xavier comeback. The third quarter saw the Xavierians come together as a team as their main man Anton Lapez helped them come back to trim the lead to four points coming into the pay off period. Former Blue Eagle gunner Jet Nieto was quite emotional and pissed when his son Michael Nieto, the big boy who had great inside presence, fell down and hurt his forearm. Dr. Jet came to the rescue in aid of his son to ice the forearm so that he can go back to the game. Michael teamed up with his twin brother Matthew, Enzo Joson, Thirdy Ravena and Sheik Cariño to turn back the last ditch effort of the Stallions to salvage the win. In the end it was heart and defense that spelled the difference.

Basketball runs in the genes of all these players, specially the ones who have fathers who played in the PBA. But none was prouder than the father of Sheik Cariño who was judged as tournament MVP. Aside from the proud dad was a proud uncle who is an avid basketball fan - ME! Congratulations to Sheik for being the MVP and more importantly the whole SBP basketball team together with head Coach PJ Navarro who is the younger brother of my classmate Allan and son of former Grade School professor Ulpiano Navarro.

Obviously their parents were present in the stands, Blue Eagle Yuri Escueta and San Miguel Point Guard Olsen Racela rooting for Rafa, Blue Eaglet Keifer Ravena with mom Mossy Ravena rooting for Thirdy, former Blue Eagles Jett Nieto cheering on his twins Matthew and Michael while Albert Mendoza was there for son Martin Mendoza as was Blue Eagles head coach Norman Black. A lot of Blue Eaglets were also there supporting the team while former Lady Eagles assistant coach Joey Mendoza. On the other part of the stands were Donnie Puno together with his dad Atty. Dong Puno.

Hope springs eternal for the Ateneo for these kids will most probably be the team of Ateneo 2016-2020!!! One Small Fight for the young ones in Blue and White.

Coach Franz - Home is where the problem is!

I have always admired Franz Pumaren even through he played for La Salle and is now its head coach. I believe that as long as he is the Coach of the Green Archers, La Salle will always be competitive and win a championship at least every three years. That was why I got excited when I heard that he was chosen as the Coach of the Nokia RP Youth Team. I think we got the best Coach for the job. Unfortunately, the controversy began when he went home to Coach for the DLSU vs Ateneo game last September 6, 2008.  SBP Executive Director Noli Eala hit the nail in the coffin when he said that 

“Regardless of what’s the situation back home, he (Pumaren) had the morale obligation to stay with the team. I don’t agree with what he did and I think it’s a ground for the organization to re-evaluate his commitment to the team,” said SBP executive director Noli Eala.

“I don’t want to second guess him but I’m sure he knew the commitment, he knew the schedule. It’s his moral obligation to be with the team until the end of the battle,” Eala added

Then Franz retorts that he came home so that Coach Jack can have more time with his father. Well, if Coach Jack wanted to have more time with his dad then why was he there in the DLSU game?  For me, whatever the reason with which Coach Franz came home is somewhat an error in judgment. I myself would want him to coach DLSU against Ateneo for he is definitely La Salle Basketball. The sad thing is, I believe that the issue will be something that the Green Archers will use as a rallying point for the championship. Remember last year, saying that they were vindicated with the championship?!? The Junior Archers most probably, since it was not their mistake to field an ineligible player. 

Anyway, to make a long story short, I just want to say that it was an error in judgment for Coach Franz to come home period.  I commend Quinito Henson for speaking out loud and for Bill Velasco for airing the side of Franz.

I just hope that we reevaluate our priorities, sportsmen are role models too and what has happened will always be a point of reference in the future. I just hope that there was a lesson learned in this whole shenanigan.
