STI West Negros turn back STI College Ortigas-Cainta

Rebound battle

Visayas champion STI West Negros University pounded STI College Ortigas-Cainta to submission in the first half then cruised to victory in the second half to win their second game and tie STI College Malolos for the top slot in Group B with similar 2 – 0 win-loss slates.  STI West Negros will now battle the other  undefeated team in the Group B bracket – STI College Malolos to determine the top team in their group.

Excellent defense by Jei Ramos

Center Forward Kobe Vizcarra and point guard Renz Solomon proved to be a strong 1 – 2 punch for the West Negros squad as both players scored eight points each as the 8 – 4 start of West Negros suddenly became 24 – 10 advantage after one quarter of play.  The Ortigas-Cainta team shot poorly as they sank only 3 of 16 shots (19%) while the West Negros team went 9 of 17 (53%)

The second quarter saw West Negros forward JV Veloso showcase his scoring prowess by scoring 14 points on 6 of 7 shooting.  Veloso helped increase a 14 point lead to a whopping 24 point lead by the half as their defense tightened up to make the Ortigas-Cainta team bleed for points. While the Cainta team tried to put the cuffs on Veloso, John Nermal controlled the inside and scored at will.

John Mc Hale Nermal still scores after being fouled

Although STI West Negros coasted through the second half, STI College Ortigas-Cainta would try to mount a rally but will eventually be silenced by the defense of the Bacolod based West Negros team. Jeff Estabillo and Van Dam Locsin tried to give the Ortigas-Cainta team back to the ball game but the offense of JV Veloso and John Nermal was just too much for the Rizal based team.

STI West Negros University had the better shooting percentage 48% - 36%, outrebounded their opponents 48 – 43 and had more assists 15 – 8 which showed the over-all dominance of the West Negros team. Dave Cruz came back with a bang for STI College Malolos after serving a one-game suspension by top scoring with 14 points and adding 3 rebounds an assist and a steal.  STI College Malolos started the first five minutes of the first quarter with a paralyzing 10 – 3 blast  and secured the quarter with a 19 – 10 lead as Cruz torched the Caloocan defense with five first quarter points which was backed up by Center Kelbert Victoria’s four points.

Aram Pujante drives by Redd Aquino

In the second quarter both teams fought to a standstill as both teams shot identical 3 of 11 from the field and STI College Malolos just maintained their lead 31 - 20at the end of the half. In the  third quarter Ralph Bonifacio took matters into his own hands by scoring 11 points to lead the Malolos team to a third quarter surge. While their offense went to full gear their defense limited the Caloocan team to 21% shooting as the Caloocan 5 missed 13 shots. Veteran point guard Mark Abin carried the fight for the Caloocan dribblers by scoring 5 points. The quarter ended with the Bulakenyos enjoying a commanding 21 point lead 52 – 31.

The fourth quarter saw STI College Malolos just cruise to victory as they stymied every Caloocan run to make the game close. Ariel Bautista tried to pump some life in the Caloocan team but unfortunately his scoring cannot be supported by his teammates as the Malolos team coasted to victory as they await their match up against co-undefeated Group B leader STI West Negros University. STI College Malolos outrebounded their smaller counterparts 52 – 31 and had more assists 13 – 3 which spelled the doom for the Caloocan team.

STI College Koronadal bring down defending champs in overtime

Bernard Caguisano Jr. scores on this jumper

STI College Koronadal brought down defending champion STI College Global City 74 – 71 in overtime and virtually ousted the champs from defending their crown this year.  Bernard Caguisano scored the marginal three pointer with 1:15 left in the extra period that put a dagger in the title retention bid of the Global City squad. Sean Morte eventually sealed the win with two free throws after the Koronadal team got the loose ball from the two missed free throws of Caguisano.

Raymond Veluz scores on the lay-up

Raymond Veluz opened up the scoring by putting the Global City squad ahead 5 – 0 as he scored on a lay-up and a three pointer. After making it a 6 – 2 lead for Global City, Norman Puerto, Kenneth Libdan and Ricardo Castillo would then counter with a 10 – 2 blast to take a four point lead 12 – 8 which eventually had the Global City squad take a time out to break the Mindanaoan’s momentum. Both teams exchanged baskets and when the first quarter buzzer sounded they were both back to square one with an 18 – all deadlock.

The vastly improved Kenneth Libdan cans this jumper

At the start of the second quarter STI College Koronadal went to Bernard Caguisano Jr., Norman Puerto and Glenn Sulit right away to erect an 8 point lead 26 – 18 as the hapless Global City squad could not buy a basket. Mike Sampurna eventually got the Taguig based Global City team on the board as he socred five consecutive points via  a three pointer at the 5:34mark and two more free throws in the next play to cut the Koronadal lead to three 23 – 26 with 5 minutes and 10 seconds to go. After exchanging baskets and having a 34 – 30 lead, Glenn Sulit would beat the buzzer and sink a three pointer to give the South Cotabato quintet a seven point cushion, 37 – 30, going to the halftime break.
Mike Sampurna squeezes in for 2 points

Mike Sampurna and Shawn Sabordo scored back to back baskets to start off the third quarter with the defending champions cutting the Koronadal lead 35 – 38. Unfortunately for them, Bernard Caguisano Jr. then went to work and combined with Cris Valencia to open up a ten point lead for the Koronadal team 45 – 35. After a Jeanssen Pangilinan basket, Valencia and Sean Morte would silence the Global City team by conniving on an 8 – 2 blast to give the South Cotabato quintet its biggest lead at 55 – 37 that prompted Coach Paulo Rosales of Global City to call a timeout. The quarter ended with the Mindanao champs leading the defending champions 57 – 41.

Jeanssen Pangilinan scores off a turnaround

The fourth quarter saw the Global City squad of old as team from Taguig tightened their defense and put their offense on overdrive.  Kley Lumelay ignited their fourth quarter rally by scoring back to back three pointers to bring them closer. Bernard Caguisano Jr. would answer with his own three pointer to give them added cushion going to the last six minutes. After Norman Puerto put the Koronadal team ahead 68 – 53 with 5:30 left, Global City would make the Koronadal team settle for jumpers that missed, the defending champs came back to life by going on a 15 – 0 tear capped by Kley Lumelay’s three pointer that tied the score at 68 – all with 23 seconds left in the game. Norman Puerto would then miss out on a potential game winner that sent the game to overtime.

The dagger three by Bernard Caguisano Jr.

In overtime, Bernard Caguisano Jr. scored five points including the cold blooded dagger three that broke the hearts of the defending champions. The defending champs came back from 16 points yesterday to seal the win but failed to do so this time around. STI College Koronadal will then face STI College Las Pinas and the winner will eventually enter the final four of this one week national finals.

Raul Guerrero scores on this jumper

The Santa Rosa dribblers worked hard right away from the opening tip to the final buzzer as they led the whole game and never let the Las Pinas dribblers threaten them.  Both teams tried to employ their pressure defenses but the experience of the Laguna cagers showed as they attacked their press RJ Guerrero, Kent Fabic, Bryan Ursua and June Aliparo ran rings around the Las Pinas guards. After the ceasefire, the Laguna team was on top in the high scoring first quarter 30 – 19.

Joemarei dela Cruz eludes his defender

In the second quarter, STI College Santa Rosa once again stamped their class over their overmatched opponents by scoring more points and more importantly limiting their opponents to just 12 second quarter points. While the Santa Rosa team shot 56% from the field (10/18), STI College Las Pinas could only sink 5 of the 16 shots given them for a 31% clip. After two quarters STI College Santa Rosa was completely in control of the game 52 – 31.

Bryan Ursua scores

STI College Santa Rosa coasted in the second half and quelled every rally by the Las Pinas team. June Aliparo once again led the Santa Rosa dribblers with 22 points on 6 of 12 shooting from beyond the arc and he did that all in 18 minutes of playing time and did not even play in the fourth quarter.  STI College Las Pinas was led by the duo of Mark Ruallo and Dalton Balidoy, the two scored 18 and 15 points respectively.  Jon Ursua, Jeric Hercia, Raul Guerrero and Rey Romualdo also scored in double digits for the Laguna team.  STI College Santa Rosa will try to avenge their loss to defending champion STI College Global City in their next game as the Laguna team is aching to win its first STI National title by being on top of the Group A bracket with a win on wednesday.

STI West Negros University mauls STI College Caloocan 85 - 36

John Pastias of WNU scores on a lay-up

The Visayan brand of basketball debuted at the first day of the National Finals of the 2016 STI National Basketball tournament with the STI West Negros University mauling a fighting STI College Caloocan team 85 – 36.  Since the start of the tournament last February, the Bacolod based dribblers has beaten 4 teams with an average of 70 points to validate their claim that they are one of the favorites in the tournament.

Rommel Galvez floats

The STI West Negros University team started slowly and engaged the Caloocan dribblers to a defensive game in the first quarter. Wily point guard Renz Solomon dazzled the Caloocan dribblers and rang rings around them as he scored six of the 11 points of the WNU team. The first quarter score of 11 – 8 stood for awhile with both teams feeling each other, missing three pointers and lay-ins.

John Nermal flies high for the two points

In the second quarter, Coach Dennis Tumayan finally fielded in the slithery John Nermal who scored nine of the 11 points of the WNU team. Nermal was unstoppable inside as he scored at will to give the WNU team a 22 – 19 lead with Mark Abin, Ariel Bautista and Jomar Salazar combining to produce 11 second quarter points, the most they had in the game.

By the third quarter, the STI West Negros team went full-steam as Nermal, Solomon and John Pastias combined for 25 of the WNU team’s 32 third quarter points to give them some separation from the Caloocan dribblers. Coach Karen Anne Salopong tried everything to stem the tide but unfortunately her boys were outmatched by their Visayan counterparts.  STI WNU’s stingy defense and trapping made the Caloocan team turn the ball over and took bad shots as the WNU team had 21 steals that forced Caloocan to turn the ball over 36 times. The quarter ended with STI WNU safely ahead 54 – 28.

With the outcome already settled, the West Negros dribblers still went full steam in the fourth quarter and scored 31 points to pound their opponents to submission. The STI WNU team’s statline showed that they beat the Caloocan team in every category. STI WNU shot better 47% - 21 %, had more rebounds 55 – 47, more assists 16 – 6, steals 21 – 7, block shots 9 – 2 and turned the ball over 16 times fewer (20 -36) than STI College Caloocan. The West Negros team is a team with a mission this year, will they end up on top? Let’s see as the plot thickens in the next few days.

Mike Sampurna floats in the air

Mike Sampurna sank three free throws in the final 11 seconds to seal the comeback win for the defending champions STI College Global City as they beat STI College Las Pinas 74 – 71 and escape a monumental upset during the resumption of the 2016 STI National Basketball Tournament. Raymund Veluz scores on a lay-up

Diminutive point guard Raymond Veluz stood tall by scoring 20 points and hauling down 14 rebounds, eight (8) on the offensive end, and getting 4 steals enroute to an another impressive all-around game to carry the defending champions once again for the win.  Center Anthony Pangilinan ably backed up Veluz as he scattered 17 points after a horrendous shooting day as he tallied 6/16 from the field (37.5%) considering most of his shots came from 5 feet of the basket.
Cris Jutie lays the ball in

Dalton Balidoy carried the fight for the Las Pinas team by scoring 23 points. Shooting guard Mark Ruallo actually topscored for the Las Pinas team as he went hot in the second half by sinking  7 three pointers with the last one to give the Las Pinas team a commanding 64 – 47 lead. Unfortunately, when STI College Global City mounted their comeback, the duo’s scoring suddenly disappeared.
Jeanssen Pangilinan scores on a lay in

STI College Global City’s poor shooting (35%) was negated by the big rebound edge they had against STI College Las Pinas 68 – 40.  Global City was threatening to blow the game wide open after leading 23 – 16 in the second quarter, unfortunately because of the pesky Las Pinas pressure defense, the southern team came back to take the upper hand in the third quarter which ended with STI College Las Pinas leading by eight 53 – 45.

Dalton Balidoy stretches in for a two

STI College Global City used their experience to comeback in the game as their heads up defense made the rookie laden Las Pinas team to force their shots which resulted in a crippling 15 – 0 blast which was so devastating to STI College Las Pinas. STI College Global City also had 27 turnovers with Veluz and Carl Manzano getting 7 turnovers each. Their recovery was timely and puts the Global City squad on the hunt once again to defend their crown.

STI College Malolos squeaks past STI College Ortigas-Cainta

STI College Malolos flirted with disaster but regained their bearing just in time to beat STI College Ortigas-Cainta 83 – 78.   Although the Bulacan team was the bigger team, their small soldiers were the ones that pierced the heart of the Cainta team as Glenn Bautista and Arche Salo torched the nets with 21 and 15 points respectively with power forward Mark Tamayo chipping in also 15 points and adding 10 rebounds.  On the other hand, the trio of Richard Palanca, Ron Sanvictores and Joel Ramos combined for 40  points with Sanvictores and Ramos getting a double-double by adding 13 and 14 rebounds respectively.

STI College Santa Rosa beats STI College Koronadal

The Meralco Bolt's Anjo Caram does the ceremonial toss to start the National Finals

STI College Santa Rosa took time to heat up but still got the job done by beating Mindanao champion STI College Koronadal 73 - 51 at the start of the National Finals week of the STI National Basketball tournament at the Eusebio H. Tanco gymnasium at the STI College Ortigas-Cainta Campus.  June Aliparo led the Laguna based Luzon topnotchers by scoring 29 points and giving STI College Santa Rosa more breathing room as they gave the South Cotabato based champs a rude welcome.

June Aliparo sinks a three-pointer

The first quarter started with both teams sizing each other up and showing good defense against each other.  The trio of Bernard Caguisano Jr., Norman Puerto and Kenneth Libdan carried the fight for the Southerners as they were on the verge of taking the first quarter until a last second heave by Raul Guerrero tied the score at 16 – all.  Both teams were oozing with energy and were not giving any room for each other to score that resulted in a tie after one quarter.

Vince Romero scores on a jumper

In the second quarter, STI College Santa Rosa began to slightly pull away as the Laguna tightened their defense more that made the Mindanao team score only 9 points as against the 18 of South Luzon champs.  RJ Guerrero scored 10 points in this quarter and teamed up with Aliparo as they surged ahead 34 – 25 amidst a scoring drought by the Koronadal team.
Coach Erald maps out a play

In the third quarter June Aliparo fuelled the Santa Rosa offense once again as he scored 13 points with most of the points coming from the rainbow area and the free throw as he was fouled while taking a three-pointer.  With Norman Puerto and Cris Valencia pacing the Koronadal team, their efforts were still in vain as the Santa Rosa team outscored them 25 – 18 which gave STI College Santa Rosa a 59 – 42 lead going to the pay-off period.

Addis Lizen on the drive

Commuting to Universal Studios

For a change, we decided to commute via the Singapore Mass Rail Transit (MRT) and Cable Car to Universal Studios instead of going there via taxi. In doing that we learned that the Singapore MRT system has more than a hundred stations and lines. But when you get the hang of it, its quite easy to understand.

We had a 15 - 20 minute walk from our hotel the Orchard Hotel Singapore. The weather was nice for walking and I had many stops because it was quite hard for me to walk for almost a kilometer going to the MRT Station.

After walking endlessly, we finally found the Orchard Station of the MRT. Luckily they had a mall beneath the at the street complete with working escalators.

Had to wait for a while as my sister bought the tickets for us.

My sister buying the tickets through a kiosk. Note that it took her almost five minutes to get the tickets since there were no long cues in getting tickets.

This is a sight to behold, we never thought we can sit down considering that comparing this one to the MRT in Manila which is always full.

From the Orchard Station we took the North South line and went down at Dthe Dhoby Gaut station. Then we transferred to the North East line Dhoby Gaut station enroute to the Harbour Front Station. We walked again to the next building to ride a cable car to Sentosa.

After alighting at the Harbour Front Station, we walked once again to the city's most unique hilltop destination - Faber Peak Singapore. At the lobby of the building we bought our tickets at SG$29.

Eight people can fit inside a cable car. I think if we have something like this in the Philippines, most cable cars would carry 10 - 12 passengers with some sitting at the laps of the others. Just like what we say in the Philippines, "Punuan, Kalong Kalong, upong walong piso po!"

After that ride, we changed cable cars as we went down the Mount Faber Line station to change cars.

The second set of cable cars at the Sentosa Station are colored and looks cool.

Upon alighting the Cable Car you will be greeted by the biggest Merlion in Singapore which is 37 meters tall.

Going to Universal Studios we walked around the Sentosa Island and passed by the Lake of Dreams

We passed by a lot of directional signs and walked and walked and walked

Finally, the last sign going to Universal Studios. After turning right you can see the Universal Studios Globe. We must've walked at least 8,000 steps to reach our destination.
