ABS-CBN supports the STI 18th NYC

STI's long time media partner, the ABS-CBN Network supported the 18th STI  National Youth Convention which was held at the SMX Convention Center from February 6 - 8, 2013. Taking on the topic "Extreme Definition: Exercise your beliefs." ABS-CBN reporters were on hand to share their different experiences. Below are some of the reporters who were there to support the event.

STI College Malolos turned to its running game to stymie the returning STI College Munoz-EDSA 102 – 65.  Abram Pineda anchored the Malolos cagers fastbreak run as he scored 32 big points with most of them coming in the first and third quarter to spark their run and give them more distance against their opponents.  The Bulacan based cagers scored 28 first quarter points, 27 2nd quarter points  and another 29 in the third canto to showcase the offensive power of Malolos team which is seeking to improve on its third place finish last year.

Former Junior Olympians Arvin Detubio and Carlo Jimenez were also instrumental in giving STI College Malolos a good run as Detubio scored 16 points while Jimenez added six points but dished out nine assists which were mostly lead passes to Pineda and Detubio.  Leading the comebacking STI College Munoz-Edsa team is Rizaldy Binibini who scored 15 points while Mark Bolaolao and Frederick Cruz added 14 and 12 points respectively.

In the lone close game of the day, the STI College Global City squad leaned on the clutch shooting of Michael de Belen to escape with an 81 – 77 win over another comebacking team, STI College Las Piñas.  After seeing the first three games end in routs, the Global City squad raced to several double digit leads and went into the fourth quarter with a nine point lead and threatening to put the game beyond recall.

Just when everyone thought that the Global City squad was about to pull away, STI College Las Pinas through Cris John Jutie and Kristian Dimaano orchestrated an amazing comeback as the duo combined for 25 fourth quarter points to turn to turn a  49 – 58 deficit into a 67 – 62 lead with three minutes remaining in the game.  After calling a time out, the Global City team turned to Junior Olympian Jim Lontoc who sank a three pointer while de Belen added another one to give them the upperhand once again 68 - 67.  While Jutie and Dimaano had their way once again while rookie Jeremy Bungar scored on two clutch hits this time.

Then both teams refused to wilt under pressure as Jutie scored four points and Dimaano five points as he gave the elad once again to the Las Pinas team  76 – 74 with a three pointer over de Belen.  Not to be intimidated, Global City guard  Jeremy Bungar scored four points when Lontoc and De Belen were covered well by the Las pinas defense to give them a one point lead 77 - 76.  De Belen then iced the game with three free throws as Jutie missed one to give the Global City team their first victory this year.

STI College Santa Rosa & Balagtas win opener

Three time defending champion STI College Santa Rosa was rusty in the first three minutes but eventually fended off the tight stand of STI College Caloocan to come out with a masterful 104 – 57 win at the start of the 13th season of the STI Basketball Showdown.  Leading the three time defending champs is Aldrin Del Rosario who scored the tournament’s first three points. He would later score another three pointer to lead all scorers with 12 points in a balanced performance by the Santa Rosa dribblers.

All fifteen players sent in by Coach Leo Callado of STI College Santa Rosa scored with veterans Mark Arzola and Kenneth Batiquin adding 10 points each for a balanced Santa Rosa attack.  Reb Maunahan, Dean Fudotan and Addis Lizen on the other hand combined each dished out four assists each to show the unselfishness of the Laguna based champions. Reenan Sayao on the other blocked three shots. On the other hand, Kevin Bautista scored 9 points to lead the Caloocan dribblers who has improved from their last year’s performance.

Likewise winning by a mile and showing that they are again on a collission course with the defending champs is last year’s 1st Runner up STI College Balagtas. The bulacan based cagers used their superb defense to fend off a spirited stand by the vastly improved STI College Novaliches team to beat them 89 - 68.  Rookie Andres topscored for the Balagtas cagers as he scored a game high 24 together with 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals. The Novaliches team was led by former junior Olympian Charlon Untalan who scored 22 points.

13th STI Basketball Showdown opens

The STI College Basketball showdown opened its 13th season this year with eight teams joining the league.  After two tumultuous years that saw membership go down, the league is back to eight teams once again with three time defending champion STI College Santa Rosa leading the field. Other teams that joined are STI College Balagtas, STI College Global City, STI College Caloocan, STI College Novaliches, last year’s surprise team STI College Malolos and returnees STI College Munoz-Edsa and STI College Las Piñas.

STI - ESG Christmas Party

It was a red carpet premiere and just like in Hollywood, the employees of the STI Education Services group came up with Hollywood stars and local stars for the STI - ESG Christmas party most aptly dubbed as Hollywood stars meet Pinoys. Not much has changed since the formula for a successful STI party has always been good food, good booze and all night dancing which has been a staple in almost all STI Parties. Ateneo Alumni Homecoming - a journey of brotherhood

AHS 1987 - the SIlver Jubilarians

You have to give it to the Ateneo.  Even after High School they teach you things that you have never done before through an event and eventually you the experience you encounter makes you wiser and gives you a better perspective on a lot of things.  Being an Atenean has its twist and turns while being a student but the lessons we have learned in mounting the annual Ateneo Alumni homecoming has made an impact in my life and  in the lives of the other council members who are the representatives of each class.

As hosts of the annual Ateneo Alumni Homecoming, our batch had a three to four year head start immediately after our Grade school batch reached 25 years. Unfortunately, nothing happened and it was only in September of last year that the batch eventually went down to talk and line up things to raise the proposed 2 Million pesos to mount the event.  As they say the start is always the hardest as me and my batchmates laid down plans on how to raise the 2 million and eventually get some amount of money to give to the Tulong Dunong Foundation.

Twenty five years is a long time to be out of each others reach and a lot has really changed with regards to the attitude, personality and orientation of most of us all.  There were many disagreements, problems  and most of all frustrations in dealing with every project we lined up but what made the event succesful was our common agreement to give it all to our beneficiary.  It was moot and academic that the tulong dunong foundation would benefit from us but a more noble cause was the support that the Jesuit infirmary would get from us.

The only investment we had was our time and effort and the last one a half years we, the council members, devoted a lot for this worthy cause witht he most trying time barely a month before the event. What we discovered was that a little miscommunication will really rock the boat. But one thing fine about it is was that we discovered that we can admit if we committed a mistake and humbly accept it – we acted like Ateneans.

This homecoming was much more than seeing classmates and batchmates who I spent 16  of my first 21 years of my life with.  It was a journey to solidify bonds that were started when we were young, bonds that became stronger with each time we were together, bonds transformed us from friends to brothers. Happy 25th Anniversary Ateneo High School 1987, I am what I am because of you!

The Benchingkode - AHS '87 marks 25th year

The theme of the Ateneo Alumni Homecoming for 2012 is The (Last) Ateneo Homecoming.  This theme is an end of the world celebration which is derived from the single most talked about phenomenon that is about to happen in the year 2012 - the end of the world.  This teaser shows various clips which eventually ends in a party at the Ateneo High School covered courts. The story actually comes from the Mayans creating a book which is called "The Benchingkode." The book contains the prophecies of the Mayans which includes the end of the world on December 21, 2012.  The book was passed on from generation to generation which was eventually transferred into a USB which was found at the sword of St. Ignatius. After seeing the contents of the USB, a text and call blast was made to members of AHS 1987 to call up every Atenean to go to the AHS Covered Courts which will be the last remaining frontier when the world ends. 

A familiar naughty tradition

Everyone is tasked to bring his own end of the world gadget or something that you would definitely bring when the world ends.  The story line is very timely and it makes us ask ourselves - are we ready for the end of the world?  Whether you are ready or not, come to the Ateneo Alumni Homecoming on December 8, 2012. If there is one thing that we will guarantee is that you will have all the fun in the world and as we say let's party like there's no "toMAYA!" Ateneo Sports Hall of fame Induction

Fritz Gaston wrote the Ateneo Sports Hall of Fame and he mentioned the value and contributions of Olsen Racela as an integral part of the  1988 Ateneo Blue Eagles and as a result, the ASHOF eventually included him as one of the 10 Ateneans inducted to the Ateneo Sports Hall of Fame.  Racela was originally listed as one of the athletes who will be given a citation but Gaston’s recommendation made the difference.

Racela together with fellow Ateneo High School 1987 batch mate Danny Francisco was one of four members of the 1987-1988 Back to Back UAAP champion team that made it this year. The other two members inducted of that 1988 team were point guard Jun Reyes and power forward Eric Reyes.   That brings to eight the number of cagers inducted on that team with Nonoy Chuatico, Jet Nieto, Sep Canlas and Alex Araneta are the four others who were inducted in 2009.

The night was filled with a lot of legends specially the teams i saw while I was in grade school and the team I rooted for in college.  The core of the 1975 – 1976 powerhouse back to back NCAA champion team was there namely Fritz Gaston, Joy Carpio, Padim Israel, Chito Narvasa, Maling Estrella and Steve Watson.  The 5-peat Ateneo Blue Eagles were also there to cheer on the Hall of Famers.

Other Ateneans feted in the event were Tony Cuyegkeng, Jun Gonzales, Piquillo Enage, Andy Nanagas, Eddie Apacible and the only non-Atenean inducted was champion Volleyball Coach Pitong Custodio who passed away last November 10, 2012. Given citations were Atty Mario “Babes” Oreta and Frederick “Deck” Go who were instrumental in making the turnaround in Ateneo Badminton.  The event was held at the Ricardo and Dr. Rosita Leong Hall in the Ateneo were veteran sportscaster Sev Sarmenta was the Master of Ceremonies.

The Ateneo High School Batch 1987 and Blue Market Enterprise presents - BLUE MARKET.  This event is a project by our batchmates and part of the proceeds will go to the Batch 1987 fund, Batch 1987 will host this year's Ateneo Grand Alumni Homecoming which will be on December 8, 2012.It is a special batch fundraising project, in support of social entrepreneurs, student business initiatives, and similar micro enterprises, for the benefit of the Tulong-Dunong Foundation and the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus. 

The event will run on November 17, 18, 24 and 25 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturdays and 6:00 am to 3:00 pm on Sundays.  Let us support the BLUE MARKET.
